Selection And Precautions for High-Flux Filter Cartridge Filters

Selection Guide:

Clarify filtration objectives:

First determine whether the purpose is particle removal, clarification, or sterilization, which will define the required filtration precision.

Understand fluid properties:

1. Chemical composition: Select filter membranes and sealing materials with chemical compatibility to avoid corrosion or dissolution of the filter cartridge.

2. Viscosity, temperature and pH value: These factors affect filtration speed and the tolerance of filter materials.

Confirm process conditions:

1. Flow rate requirements: Determine the quantity and size of filter cartridges based on the required flow rate and the flux characteristics of the cartridges.

2. Operating pressure: Ensure the pressure rating of the filter cartridge and housing is higher than the maximum operating pressure of the system.

Select filter cartridge configuration:

1. Precision: For example, 1-10µm is optional for pre-filtration, and 0.22µm for terminal sterilization.

2. Material: PES and Nylon are commonly used for aqueous fluids; PP and PTFE for organic solvents, strong acids and alkalis.

3. Size and connection: Select matching filter cartridges according to the size and connection type of the filter housing.

Precautions:

Pre-flushing:

New filter elementsmust be fully flushed with pure water or a suitable solvent before use to remove wetting agents, particulates and other impurities that may exist during production.

Sterilization and disinfection:

1. For in-line steam sterilization, strictly control the steam pressure and temperature to avoid filter cartridge damage caused by thermal shock from excessive temperature difference. Follow the SIP parameters provided by the manufacturer.

2. If off-line sterilization (e.g., autoclave) is adopted, ensure the filter cartridge is fully wrapped and the sterilization procedure is correct, and the cartridge must be thoroughly dried after sterilization.

Installation and operation:

1. Handle gently during installation, ensure the O-ring is intact and properly seated to avoid scratching the filter cartridge.

2. Raise the pressure slowly when starting up to prevent filter membrane damage caused by pressure shock (water hammer effect).

3. Monitor the inlet and outlet differential pressure; replace the filter cartridge in a timely manner when the differential pressure reaches the end-point differential pressure recommended by the manufacturer (usually 0.3-0.5 MPa).

Integrity test:

For critical processes (e.g., sterile filtration), conduct an integrity test before and after filtration to verify the integrity of the filter cartridge and the effectiveness of filtration.

Flow direction:

Ensure the fluid flows from the outside to the inside of the filter cartridge; reverse operation may cause damage to the filter cartridge structure.

Storage:

Unused filter cartridges should be stored in their original packaging in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight.
